Marine noise mitigation for Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm

As part of our marine noise mitigation work for Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm, we used an innovative method for monitoring porpoise activity using full-spectrum recordings instead of click detectors.

Baker Consultants Marine – Marine Services

Underwater noise and marine mammal experts

Baker Consultants Marine specialises in the acoustic side of marine ecology, including underwater noise and marine mammal monitoring. We operate in sectors such as offshore wind, dredging, ports and harbour developments, offering a truly consultative service and solving problems using sound scientific data.

We have a reputation for innovation, particularly in bioacoustics, and are continually developing our service offering and seeking to drive down the costs of data collection. We have close links with innovative companies who provide us with the latest survey equipment, meaning our clients get a cost-effective service based on reliable and defensible data.

Our Marine team ranges from underwater noise specialists to marine ecology experts, and from leading authorities in environmental law and public inquiries to highly trained data analysts. We provide a comprehensive service at all stages of project development, including modelling potential impacts at conception, informing Environmental Impact Assessments at planning stage and monitoring during baseline, construction and operation.

We are experienced in liaising with regulators to negotiate the most cost-efficient monitoring surveys and address site-specific requirements. We design our work to be fit-for-purpose and ensure that it is technically and commercially robust and able to withstand any level of scrutiny.

New service

Our new remote sensing service has launched

We now offer a comprehensive remote sensing data capture and data analysis service.

Together, our in-house GIS and ecological survey experts, bioacousticians and Chief UAV Engineer and Pilot have developed an entirely new approach to gathering marine mammal and sea bird data, combining conventional boat based surveys (e.g. Marine Mammal Observer surveys and JNCC European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) bird surveys) with innovative UAV-gathered high definition aerial photography and bioacoustic surveys of cetaceans and seabirds.

Why do you need our Marine services?

All marine mammals are protected under European Law, which means that activities that may harm them need to be monitored. This includes offshore operations that will introduce noise in the marine environment, such as pile-driving, seismic surveys or use of explosives.

Additionally, noise levels are regulated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Descriptor 11) to ensure Good Environmental Status is achieved. This has put the offshore wind industry under increasing pressure to minimise the impacts of its operations on the physical and biological marine environments.

In response, governments are typically demanding fast reporting on noise levels and imposing specific noise emission thresholds, which resembles a high risk for any offshore development. To minimise this project risk, we now recommend and carry out real-time noise monitoring for our clients.

What does Baker Consultants Marine offer?

  • Assistance throughout the project from the early planning stages.
  • Liaison with relevant environmental authorities to develop cost-efficient monitoring and mitigation protocols that satisfy regulators.
  • Representation if your project is subject to public inquiry.
  • Innovative approaches, including the use of real-time noise monitoring equipment.
  • A fast, efficient and flexible approach to monitoring and reporting on underwater noise levels, which has been instrumental in gaining sign-off for foundation installation from the German government for two large-scale offshore wind farms.
  • The ability to analyse vast amounts of data over a relatively short period of time to a high quality standard.
  • A unique skill-set combination, allowing us to understand the physical principal of sound propagation underwater, collect and analyse acoustic data, including biological sound emissions (such as dolphin and porpoise calls) and ensure environmental laws and regulations are adhered to.

When should I get in touch?

Obtaining the consent for conducting offshore operations can be a very lengthy process, so it is essential to start planning ahead of time and maintain communication with the regulatory bodies. This is something we can do for you whilst planning the surveys required for baseline as well as the construction phase. Contact us now to discuss how we can assist you with your project.

Pablo Rodríguez-Oitabén

“Baker Consultants Marine provided a professional and reliable service meeting the challenges posed by the Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind project, such as the extension of the scope and tight reporting schedule. The qualified team was extremely flexible and friendly, which helped with the smooth running of the project. Baker Consultants input was instrumental in obtaining sign-off from the German government linked to strict conditions on underwater noise emissions, for the installation of all the monopile foundations.”

Søren Sørensen

“Gaining timely approval for not only some, but all, of the offshore foundations was a breakthrough for the Borkum Riffgrund 1 project as a whole. One of the factors that contributed to this was Baker Consultants’ fast and efficient reporting and we look forward to working with them on other projects.”
