Today's themes were Cumulative effects, Tools and technology, Mitigation and compensation and Future challenges.
Again, a huge amount of interesting and relevant information which will
immediately be put into practice. Our approach to ecology for wind farm
developments is going to get a right good shake up next week! I'm not
going to go through all the good stuff about measuring and adjusting for
impact, and associated stats - that's not for this forum, I am going to
take a philosophical direction tonight.

The sessions today were: species-specific vulnerabilities and population
effects, behavioural and spatial responses, collision risk modelling

There have been a number of significant updates to UK law recently which may, among other things, impact the ecological evidence required for planning applications. On Thursday 9th December, Baker Consultants is hosting a training seminar with environmental lawyer Penny Simpson of DLA Piper, specially designed for ecologists working in England.

Silly season

It’s the silly season; dusk and dawn surveys, torchlight surveys of ponds, and bottle trapping. Some would say that this is why we do the job, being out in the field, seeing amazing sunrises, and beautiful landscapes. We say that too!

Matlock Moor wind farm has been refused at Public Inquiry - don't skimp on your survey!

Susan writes: The Matlock Moor wind farm site is interesting to us not only because the site is only a few miles from our office but also because renewable energy is a key business area for Baker Consultants. What the inspectors report reveals serves as a warning to developers who might not see the value of often time-consuming and detailed survey.
