New guidance has been published on the assessment and reporting required under Article 17 of the Habitats Directive including marine habitats and species. The guidance recognises there are commonalities between the reporting on the Habitats Directive and the qualitative descriptors of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Annex 1 and encourages Member States to use the same data where appropriate. Both harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) are species for which marine Special Areas of Conservation must be designated and are therefore covered under Article 17 reporting.
